Barry Gertz, Ph.D.
Vice President for Research
Dr. Gertz’s training is in pathobiology with a focus on neuropathology. He has a diverse background including the fields of immunology, cancer biology, neurology, pathology, and stem cell research. He has a wide range of skills including cell biology, protein biochemistry, and molecular biology. Dr. Gertz has been involved in the field of biotechnology for over a decade. After conducting novel work in the area of HIV at the National Cancer Institute as Fellow, he was involved in product development for a start-up biotechnology company, Metamorphix. His job entailed delivery of a biologic from manufacture to formulation, including discovery and testing phases. Additionally, he had strong involvement with proof-of-concept in vivo efficacy studies. During his cutting-edge graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Gertz expanded on his diverse skills including the development of multiple in vivo and in vitro based assays. He has brought his extensive experience and novel approach to Synaptic Research where he led efforts in stem cell research. Most recently, as VP of Research at SR, he is responsible for day to day operations, management, research direction and scope, as well as subcontract/collaborative efforts. Recently he is a co-founder of Synterica, bringing his molecular/cell biology and managerial experience.
